Associate Director, ninth grader Isabelle, leads a warm up for our rehearsal this week.

POSTCARDS FROM CANTERBURY SET BUILD

Thanks to all who attended our productive set build. The prop room is organized, the wood and platforms tidy, Sera Daemi is working miracles with costumes using pieces from our collection, Doria Polinger is working her magic creating period hats and shoes, alum Helena Bruggeman returned and helped inventory lighting, parents Adam Weinberg, Nigel Hinds,Tom Butler, Diane Ciaburri, and Richard Beaven helped the cast build set pieces, rehang the commando cloth, and paint. The Beavens generously provided everyone with a tasty lunch. And Claire Raposo and Maya Sakharov pitched in to make the day successful. Special thanks to our technical director J.D. Falotico who organized and kept us all on track.

DID YOU KNOW IN THE MIDDLE AGES>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

-Female dress was especially geared so that a woman who was not used to the behavior of the clothing would either injure herself, or behave in a manner not considered ladylike. They were not allowed to touch their hands to their skirts which dragged along the ground and needed to be pushed aside by a particular movement of their feet when walking.

-Forks were exotic. People mostly ate with their hands, which they washed before every meal.

-Women sometimes plucked the hair from their foreheads to give themselves very high foreheads which people thought were beautiful.

-Chaucer died before Canterbury Tales was completed.

Stills From Rhinocerous

Cindy Parrish kindly shared this link with still photos from Rhinocerous. The DVD is in and will be available to go home Friday with all students who paid. There is still time to order a DVD if you are interested. $20.00 for one and $30.00 for two. Checks should be made out to BCD and given to Ms.Brentano.

Goodbye Rhinos/Hello Chaucer

Thank you to all the fans who attended Rhinoceros this weekend and supported the US Theater Ensemble. Congratulations to the cast for a job well done. And thanks to all the super parents who helped out to make it all possible.
We are gearing up for our winter production of Postcards From Canterbury. If your student has signed up, you are asked to attend a parent information meeting on Tuesday, November 29th from 4:45pm to 5:30pm in Furey at BCD. Now that we’ve transformed into Rhinoceroses, we are throwing ourselves back in time to medieval Europe.
Onward and upward! Or backward…….Thanks Ticky Kennedy for the photo below!

Act One

THANK YOU SET BUILD ATTENDEES!!!!!!

Last Saturday a group of devoted theatre volunteers and actors came to the Winthrop to saw, nail, drill, climb scaffolding, clean lighting equipment, and laugh. Without these devoted souls, we would never get our productions up and running. Our set is evolving as we rehearse and discover more about “Rhinoceros.” Thanks to all of you who gave your time on the weekend and who continue to support our efforts.
We are still seeking an early ‘sixties-looking’ arm chair for our set. And a couple of rotary dial telephones.
And if you notice a bump on your child’s forehead, and/or a slightly greenish tint to their skin or roughening of texture……um…..er……it may just be a touch of ‘rhinoceritis.’

Rhinoceritis!!!!!

Change of plans!!!!!!!!!!

After the first meeting of the Upper School Theater Ensemble last week, we have decided to shift gears and produce Ionesco’s Rhinoceros for our fall production. Written in 1960, Ionesco’s play satirizes ‘modern society while discovering new uses of language and theatrical techniques.’ New York Times
With a great deal of humor, it deals with the serious subjects of totalitarianism, conformity, and despair. Some of the students studied this play in a scene study class last year and are psyched to put it on its feet at Winthrop.
We will be producing Postcards from Canterbury as our winter production and are committed to the material with a larger number of actors as the 7th grade is invited to join us for co-curricualr theater in the winter.
The rehearsal schedule has been a bit revised, so please review the last couple of weeks for changes.
Thank you to the parents who attended the volunteer meeting last night. I will be posting a list of props, set pieces, etc…we might be seeking.
We’re off to an exciting start!
