5th Grade Perform French Plays for Mardi Gras

The Fifth Grade class performed “La Rate de Ville et Le Rat de Champ” (The City Mouse and the Country Mouse), and “Les Trois Boucs Bourrus” (The Three Billy Goats Gruff) to a packed house of students and parents as part of Mardi Gras Day at BCD. Thank you to Heather Fishman who helped with the music, and Marilyn Cromwell who helped the students with the set. Bon travail à la classe de cinquième!

1:1 Traditions – Community Campus Day

OneToOneIconAs much as the BCD community loves its long-standing traditions such as Thanksgiving Soup, Ski Fridays, and Grandparents’/Grandfriends’ Day, new events can become traditions, too. Community Campus Day is one such example.

The first Community Campus Day was held in October of 2008 and was spearheaded by Larry Bingham and Margaret Lindenmaier. It was initially created as a way for community members to support the needs of our campus by coming together to work on special projects. Over 80 parents, Trustees, faculty members and students showed up for that first Community Campus Day to help restore the information kiosk, put up a fence, winterize buildings, rake leaves, and build a new sandbox. A feeling of camaraderie and accomplishment made this a special day, and everyone who was a part of it knew Community Campus Day was destined to become a new BCD tradition. This year, the projects were bigger and better and despite the day being postponed due to weather, community members still turned out on subsequent weekends to get the projects done.

Community Campus Day is a great way to give back to our beautiful campus and preserve it for future generations of BCD students.

World Music Instruments Needed!

A note from the Music Department:

Hi BCD Families-

We are hoping to gather various world music instruments to spice up the visual environment of the music room. If you have an instrument or instruments (not too precious!) that you would like to lend us, we would like to display it in the music room.

In addition, if you have any great photos from recent BCD concerts, I would love to have copies.

Thank you!

Ms. Fishman

Preschool & Lower School Students Celebrate Alaska Day

Thanks to all the snow we received over the last few days, BCD’s campus was transformed into a winter wonderland, providing the perfect backdrop for Alaska Day and all the activities that make this BCD tradition such a special day. Students participated in such activities as tubing, skating, and sledding, and then gathered around the bonfire for warmth and s’mores.

Re-enrollment Contracts Due Next Wednesday

Please remember that the Board has created a tuition structure for next year that is tied to the deadline for submitting enrollment contracts with a deposit.  This means that the tuition is lower if you submit your re-enrollment contract on or before next Wednesday, February 17, 2010.

To maintain a balanced budget, an accurate assessment of projected enrollment is essential for our financial planning.  Perhaps the most important reason to be able to accurately project enrollment is that it allows the School to make employment commitments to our faculty in a timely manner.  And, with current applications more than double the number at this time last year, we currently anticipate the possibility of a waiting list for one or more classes next year.  Your re-enrollment contract reserves a space for your child(ren) in next year’s class(es).

Please consider the importance of the February 17, 2010 deadline to you and your School.  If you have any questions about your re-enrollment contract or need to discuss the re- enrollment deadline, please contact Gwen Connolly, or if you would like to have a confidential discussion about financial aid, please contact Amy Broberg.

BCD X-Country Ski Team at Notchview

BCD Ski 2After much doubt about whether the ski race would actually take place, Amherst school hosted a successful competition. The skiers began their day under a grey and overcast sky with temperatures that chilled racers and spectators alike. The weather resulted in cold, hard snow and conditions ideal for fast skiing.  Although both Greylock teams took home the win, BCD skiers held their own under less than ideal conditions. There will be two more races for the season: the Sids Race at Prospect Mountain on Feb. 21st and the Bill Koch League Race at New Glouster Me. on Feb. 27th. Congratulations to:
  • E. Velez- 17:29- 15th place
  • Q. Pollart- 19:26- 27th
  • J. Dolan –     22:26- 48th

1:1 Traditions – Alaska Day

OneToOneIconIf you have a student in the Preschool and/or Lower School, then you probably know that tomorrow is Alaska Day.

Once a year, the Lower School community celebrates wintertime in the Berkshires and learns about the culture, customs, wildlife and people of Alaska through interactive activities and games. Alaska Day was started by a former student, Kevin Hirt, and is continued in his memory by his teachers and friends.

This year’s Alaska Day activities include traditional Inuit games, sledding, skating, an obstacle course, snow painting, and roasting marshmallows. A fun day will be had by all!
