Vision for the English Department

My vision for the English department at BCD for the foreseeable future is to maintain the strong emphasis on good literature which serves as models for creative writing, essay analysis and construction, and recitation pieces.  Well crafted literature, prose, poetry, and dramatic pieces, embraces cultural heritage, recurrent themes (secular, religious, mythological), and archetypal images that form the essential structure of civilization.  Students should be trained to recognize, reference, and incorporate in their own work these essentials.

The literature is now and should continue to be supported and enhanced by exposure to parallel arts–music, painting, drama…Coordination amongst departments, history, art, music…must continue to be encouraged and expanded, and opportunities taken for integration of curricula.
