Branding Assignments

January 30, 2012

Over the last few weeks, students have been challenged to create a business card, an ad, and packaging for a company they imagined employed them to do branding for a product. The product they created was of less importance than the overall complexity of the design assignment. The integrity of the company logo and “look” as it was displayed in different media had to hold together and be recognizable. Students had to consider carefully what message they wanted to communicate through the choice of font, color, lay-out, and other design principles they have been practicing. Each little piece of information could make or break the important communication for their customer. Take a look at some of the solutions.

Online Tutorials

January 29, 2012

Students sampled online tutorials and supplied these reviews:

Basics  This tutorial is about the tools on the left side of the screen. It talks about the main & simplest tools, such as the black and white pointer, the pen tool, the type tool and the shape tool. It talks about the multiple uses for all of the tools on the sidebar. It is a very short tutorial and doesn’t go into great detail for all of the tools but it gives a great overview. It wasn’t really a tutorial but just a video that you could watch.

Fancy Font What I learned from the lesson was how to change the color with the gradient file. I also learned how to make a leaf with an oval.  It was a step by step and it really explained how to make the font well.  It was very useful and enjoyed it very much. It is definitely some I want to work on more.

Knife Tool This tool has an interesting use, in that it functions in a similar manner to the eraser tool, in that it separates objects into different pieces. There are a few subtle differences, those being that the knife tool removes none of the shape (the pieces retain the total area of the shape) and that the knife tool can adjust the angle of a straight cut (instead of being set at 0°, 45°, and 90°) which the eraser cannot do. The tool is not amazingly confusing, though the controls are slightly different, using the alt key locks a straight line, while the shift key confines the straight line to 0, 45, and 90 degrees. This tool is one of two (the eraser being the other) that can create the separating function. The tutorial was helpful in describing the use of the tool and how it is works.

3d and kuler I liked learning about 3d and kuler because I was not that experienced at making 3D objects on Illustrator.  I will definitely use this tool a lot because the 3D tool makes a lot of writing and shapes look better.  I really learned about how to use this tool and I think it will help me in Graphic Design.

Need CS5 On this site I couldn’t fine any tools that were on the version of Illustrator that was on this computer so all the tutorials that I had clicked on I couldn’t do, but most of them seamed interesting and I wish that I could have been able to try them.  The link below is one that I had started but then realized that this tool was not on the version I had.

Reflection Logo Tutorial Here This tutorial was about how to create a logo with a reflection. It is a step-by-step tutorial with pictures for every step. It is simple and easy to understand. The finished project looks really high tech and cool!

Trendy Design/ the 3d kuler tool: In this lesson I learned how to make 3d letters and use the kuler tool. I find the kuler tool useful because in many other  tutorials they talk about the kuler tool and it is nice to know what it is. The video was step by step, first talking about kuler the about 3d letters. This tutorial was easy to follow and I am looking forward to use 3d letters in my next Illustrator project!

Reflection Tutorial I learned how to reflect something i wrote  and how to make it look really cool like a shadow. I think I will use this a lot in life especially if I want to design something. It was a step by step and really helpful to learn how to reflect something. It showed  me what to click type or what to press every time to do something.

Trendy Design The reason I liked this tutorial was because it was so simple to understand. I think that I will use this design for cool 3D lettering on my assignments. I am glad I learned how to turn letters into 3D. This was a video tutorial by a Brain Buffet teacher. This tutorial was interesting, useful, and fun, I hope to use this tool more for my assignments.

Crazy Cool Logo This lesson is a lesson that teaches me how to use a mixture of tools and it helps me get a understanding of the tool. This was a step by step  and it told me how to create a logo that is a word and distort it a lot. It was hard and confusing, I do not think I will use it at all but it was a very good thing to learn for future use.

Logo Assignment

November 2, 2011

A logo is a symbol that represents a company, organization, or product. Many corporations are recognized by their logo alone, even when it appears without the company name. For the next project, you’ll be designing a logo for your imaginary business. Here are some easily identifiable logos. What makes them so good?

Assignment: Can you identify the 12 logos below?

Enjoy this promo piece for a new book

Typography is not just for designers. An entire movie was dedicated to this topic when the movie called Helvetica was made a few years ago. Now there is a new book called Just My Type by Simon Garfield. This is a quick, clever little Vimeo created by one of the most well known and venerable design agencies, Pentagram.
