Tuesday, October 4

Assignment for today

Continue on the design of the page(s) for the BCD booklet. Hopefully you will be able to get to flickr to choose photos and also be able print at the end of the class. Don’t let connectivity problems stop your progress. You can always design another pages or try a few more combinations of fonts, styles, sizes, colors, and arrangement on the page.

I’m going to give you a preview of what we will be doing on Tuesday, Oct. 11 when we finish this assignment. That way you can prepare for your presentation if you have time today.

On Tuesday, Oct. 11 each team will present their best design. You will answer these questions:

  1. What was your concept for the piece? How did you define the ethos* of BCD?
  2. What font(s) did you choose and why? Explain your choice of style, color, size, placement.
  3. Did you use an image (picture) or graphic elements? Explain how what you chose communicates your concept of the ethos.
  4. Explain your lay out. Why is the type the size it is in relation to the picture, for instance?
  5. How did you work as a team? Was everyone’s ideas considered? How did you settle on the final design?

*Remember that the ethos of BCD is how you experience the place, the people, and the relationships. It is something you can feel like the atmosphere or ambiance and it is also what the community aspires to. By reading the booklet which includes the Mission Statement, Definition of Values and Diversity, and the Vision Statement, you are reading a description of what BCD aspires to as a community.

Before the end of class today print out your page(s). Here is a screen shot to remind you that you need to choose just the pages you want to print. Otherwise all 12 pages will print. See the little arrow. Choose Range and put in your page numbers.

If you get finished with everything, you can look at the links on the blog or go to the wiki and look at those links.

Just My Type

New book about typography from Simon Garfield

Beginning with some basic typography studies, we’ll be exploring the difference between type that is “legible” and type that is “readable.” Is it possible for type to be legible but not readable? What about the other way around? The exercises we do at the beginning of the year will build knowledge and skills we’ll incorporate into the crown jewel of the Yearbook class, the Penguin.
