First grade

First Grade Skates!!!!

Off To Japan!

The First Graders took flight to Japan this past week. We prepared passports, boarded the First Grade plane, and enjoyed an inflight movie about two families in Japan. Once we landed we created a cherry blossom tree filled with all the things we hope to learn about Japan. Stay tuned for more to come as we explore on this adventure!

Cooperation and Celebrations

First Grade Happenings

The first grade year is rolling right along.  We are busy learning about families, peace, and celebrations around the world.  We are reading many books, writing, and creating beautiful projects.  The children have many insightful comments about peacemakers and what we can do to work toward a peaceful planet.

We celebrated with the second grade after an amazing French performance.  The children from both grades recited a poem in French, complete with movement and singing. They’ve got talent!!!  After they enjoyed a tasty apple crisp made by Mme. Downes.

Today was the rehearsal for tomorrow’s Music Concert.  Please join us at 1:30, in Fitzpatrick Hall, for what is sure to be an excellent program.  The Lower School Chorus performs first.  See you there!

First Grade Happenings

New and Upcoming!

Life continues to sail along in First Grade.  This is a busy time of year and the children are full of excitement and joy!

We have been engaged in interesting conversation, stories, and writing assignment about our Social Curriculum topic, cooperation.  Many of you may have seen the “cooperation” bulletin board at parent/teacher conferences.  In addition to that exercise, we have written a recipe for cooperation and a book.  We will share these with our friends in Lower School at an upcoming L.S. Meeting.

This coming Friday, at 6:30, the P.A. is having Movie Night, featuring “The Legend of the Guardians:The Owls of GA’Hoole.”  Kathryn Lasky, author of the book series, “The Owls of GA’Hoole,” will speak at BCD on 11/18 at 10:00 AM.  Check out the details for these events on MyBCD.

Thanksgiving Soup is just around the corner.  In preparation for this, each child needs to bring in one zucchini (chopped) and one whole apple.  Ingredients should arrive at school the morning of 11/20.  Thank you for your help in the success of our tradition of Thanksgiving Soup.

It was a gift to have the time to speak with you all at Parent/Teacher conferences.  We have been so impressed by the enthusiasm and curiosity of this class.

Enjoy your weekend!

Halloween!

First Grade News!

Our trip to the Botanical Garden was a big hit.  We toured the Garden looking for four types of evergreens.  Pine, spruce, fir and juniper were all found with the help of a little poem we learned about the needles.  After the tour, we worked in their classrooms making paper and necklaces.  We also played a sorting game and colored interesting nature pictures.  Of course, the bus rides to and from were also highlights of our trip!  ‘Hope you enjoy the slides!

On Monday, October 31st, we will celebrate Halloween.  Our class will parade with the whole Lower School all around the campus.  We will end up in Furey Hall to join in Halloween singing with Mrs. Hilliard.  After we will have “Super Choice” in the classroom.  The Class Parents are arranging for a few special treats and the children have been busy decorating the room.   The children may bring a costume for this event.  We will change into our costumes after lunch.  Please send cotumes in a labeled bag.  We look forward to seeing all the creative ideas our children have for this event.

Leaf Creations

Leaves and Trees

The children are winding down their study of trees.  Their tree books are assembled and coming home today!   After a fabulous hike in Kennedy Park with our Lower School friends they are ready for our Academic Choice about trees.  Each child has developed a plan for a project that will demonstrate their knowledge of trees.  These projects are created in class.  As a conclusion to our study the children will present them in class to each other.  We are already seeing some creative was of expressing their thoughts through writing and building projects.

Mountain Day was great fun.  We had a lovely day and the colors were beautiful.  After playing games, we enjoyed lunch together overlooking some very pretty folliage.  We were tired when we returned, but all reports were positive!

We are looking forward to Grandparents’ Day next Friday.  It is always a great event for the children and their special guests.  The children should bring lunch for their Grandparents.  Please let us know if your child is not having guests so that we can work on a buddy for our time together.
