DC Trip websites

Seventh graders did a great job making their own mini sites of the various venues they are going to visit on their trip to Washington, DC. These are embedded into Google Earth as placemarks, which open into a website.  Click the link to download the Google Earth file.

No Google Earth? Just click the links below to check out the student web sites. Several students also made mobile sites in addition to their other sites, which can be accessed with smartphones, ipads, etc.

Grade 7 DC Websites

All work on the websites for the DC trip must be completed by the end of the school day on Friday 2/24. All 7th graders, regardless of the site size options chosen must turn in at least 2 things:

1. The website URL- if you created multiple sites, please turn in all web site addresses on the spreadsheet in order to get credit for your work.

2. The embed code for the small mini site. This will be a long string of code that must be copied and pasted into the spreadsheet. This is the code which will be used for the Google Earth file. Even if you chose to make a full size web site, you MUST make a quick placemark site- 300 by 400, with a minimum of an image, and the venue title, which is linked to your full size site. After you click publish for this smaller size site you will also see the link to get the embed code. Copy the entire code and paste it into the spreadsheet.

Please remember to cite all image sources (which of course come from your advanced search and are licensed for reuse).

Requirements for 7th Grade DC Trip Research/Web Site

 DUE DATE:   FEB 24

Research:

Name of Site

Where is it located?  (Google Map)

Photos

Videos

Questions vary by venue

  • What do you expect to see there?
  • What are the current exhibits?
  • Why is this venue famous?
  • What should everyone know about this site before you go to DC?

Web Site:

Built at Wix.com

Sign up for a site using your mybcd.org email address and your color number password.

Option 1: Build a 300 by 400 pixel site which can be embedded into a placemark on Google Earth.

This site should have a minimum of 4 pages; have a home page with an image of the site, other pages with photo galleries, videos, maps and other useful information. It must have working navigation to get from one page to another and back again.

Option 2: Build a typical size site using a template or a blank site. The basic requirements are the same as above, however, there is one additional requirement- you must also make a 300 by 400 one page site with a title and an image (with a link) to the full-sized site, which will be used on the placemark on Google Earth

Note: The mobile option offered on Wix doesn’t work on Google Earth… but does seem to work on browsers and may actually work on mobile devices. You’d think that it would magically take your content and turn it into a mobile site- but alas- it does not. So… EXTRA CREDIT- BUILD A MOBILE SITE TOO (not in lieu of…)

7P Computer Homework

Search term sheet given out in class, due Friday- Jan 27.

As part of the preparation for the Washington, DC trip in March, 7th graders will be doing a short research project on one of the venues that they will be visiting. They will use this research to create a mini web page, which in turn will be embedded in a placemark on Google Earth.

As we look forward to beginning this research in February, each 7th grader has been asked to make their choices on a Google spreadsheet- click here to access. Please make your 1st, 2nd and 3rd choices by Wednesday 1/25.

All Google site work must be finished by 12/16. If you still have reflections on your projects to do, please write all reflections as homework- before class on Friday- so that you can quickly finish these up before break. Need more directions? There are How To videos in a tab on the top of this page or even more at http://tinyurl.com/siteshelp

Internet Safety PSAs

Seventh graders are finishing up their study of Internet Safety by making Vokis- talking avatars- as Public Service Announcements, telling 3 things they have learned about staying safe online. These take up quite a bit of space, and will all be displayed on a wiki page as they are completed. The vokis below are the first ones completed.

The bulk of the work the seventh graders have done on Internet Safety is in the form of comments on a series of pages on the  Internet Safety blog. Almost all of the students have finished their comments.  It would be interesting to have the parents comment as well.  Did any of the information on the pages surprise you? Did the comments of  the students surprise you? What do you do at home to ensure that your student knows how to use these resources in a safe and responsible manner?

The 7th graders will be finishing up by making a voki- a talking avatar- to explain 3 things that they have learned. These should be ready in a week or so, and will be posted when completed.

Although there are still a half dozen posters that the students are still working on, many have added to or finalized their work.

Several students worked with their grandparents on domogoanimate- an online animation program, while others worked with Google Sketchup- a 3D design program.

Google SketchUp Projects

First, a heartfelt thank you to all of the grandparents who visited our class on Grandparents Day- either physically, or virtually.  The interviews you did with your grandchildren or children are amazing.  They are so lucky to have people like you in their lives.

The 7th graders had an assignment to interview and make a digital poster of their grandparents.  Since this was an impossible assignment for some, they recorded  phone or ichat interviews or interviewed their parents about their grandparents lives. Just a note, this was a “choice”. The class was given a list of possible assignments to choose from, some choose other projects to do with their grandparents, which will be collected next week and featured online. Many students did not make a choice,  thus this was their default.  Some of the projects below are still in progress.  Some have not been added yet as we seemed to overwhelm the server at some points. These will be added next week, but I wanted to share our work in progress with you and again to thank you for helping your grandchildren. Your words of wisdom and your stories will now have their own place online.
