Grade 4 Whale Projects
April 22nd, 2012 · No Comments · Featured
Fourth graders will be working on whale research projects. They have each chosen a whale to research and will be putting all of their research onto a digital poster. Along the way they will be learning how to bookmark, using Diigo, how to use online highlighting to take notes, how to find images that are licensed for reuse and how to synthesize their research into one poster. This is a lot for these students to take in, but they are doing an excellent job thus far. We have begun the research phase. Students may research at home by logging into their Diigo accounts. Each of the items in the list must be in the completed poster. Students must cite all sources of information, image sources and video sources. This is what makes using an online bookmarking, note-taking application so useful- all of the citation information needed should be found in the bookmarks.

Check out the 4th graders websites
December 11th, 2011 · Comments Off · Featured
The 4th graders have begun to build their portfolio websites on http://sites.mybcd.org/ Everyone now has a site and most have all 4 of their projects embedded in their computer page. Ask your child to log you in with their username (firstnamelastinitialbcd) and colornumber password. They are doing an excellent job!
We will be starting a short unit on Internet Safety this week. We will be concentrating on how to stay safe online, not putting all your personal information out on the internet, and being careful when you download. The first one, Tracking Teresa, is always an eye-opener for children. They need to know how to limit the amount of personal information that they share online, without being frightened by the myth of the sexual predator behind every keyboard.

Final Thoughts on the A Week in the Life Project
December 5th, 2011 · No Comments · Featured
Today I asked the 4th graders to write down words that described the project they have finished. We took the words and made a wordle of them. The words that are the biggest in the picture are the words that appeared the most.
This project was based on 3 essential questions. Last week the 4th graders reviewed many of the projects that had come in and worked collaboratively on a Google document to answer the questions.
1. What are the similarities and differences among children around the world?
Most people have cars
In other places children have different things they like to do.
One thing I saw was popular was going to the park after school
The houses in China are very different than the houses in Massachusetts. But in Texas, the houses are similar to ours.
We all go to a school.
Some other schools have certain colors they need to wear and a lot of other people love soccer
2. How can we connect with each other through our commonalities?
Some people celebrate holidays.
Some people celebrate Christmas.
Some people celebrate Hanukkah.
Some people don’t.
We can connect by telling about holidays and school.
Some of us speak the same language and some of us don’t.
Some people in different countries play the some sports and different sports.
3. How does your geography where you live impact your topic?
When I put pictures up it has green trees and nature, but when people from China and Poland put pictures up it is tall buildings and streets.
In Canada it rains too much and here it is only sometimes.
In different parts of the world there are different animals and different climates too.
In other parts of the world the climate is different.
We all have different clothes depending on where we live
What is different is there are many different types of trees in different places.

Wrapping up the A Week in the Life Projects
December 4th, 2011 · No Comments · Featured
The fourth graders did an excellent job on this project. They got to talk to kids from all over the world and worked in small groups with students from various states in the U.S., as well as children from India, Korea, China, Poland and Canada. The project centered around 6 topics. Each student worked in a group with 6 or 7 other students in different classrooms, and most had a different teacher who supervised their work. They had to learn so many things! Each day in class, they checked Edmodo to see if they had replies to their conversations with other students, checked for assignments or comments from their teacher and then got to work on the various projects. Many students took pictures or short videos and put them on a voicethread, and commented on them; others used Glogster, a digital poster, to organize their pictures and others used Prezi, a non-linear powerpoint like way to present their work. So they not only learned how to use email, email attachments, digital cameras, record with microphones, use Edmodo, Voki, Voicethread and in some cases Glogster and Prezi, they also learned about their topic, learned more about the differences and commonalities between cultures and geographical regions and how to communicate with and collaborate with others. It was a lot of fun, and a lot of work!
Most of the work from the projects has been uploaded to the project wiki. Just look on the left navigation bar for the Final Project Showcase which has links to all of the topic group work. You can comment directly on any voicethread by signing in with either your own voicethread account or you can use your student’s ( firstnamelastinitialbcd@mybcd.org with their color number password. Some of the projects, particularly the glogster posters are harder to comment on, but the wiki is open, which means you can comment by using the discussion tab at the top of each page.
Each 4th grader will be putting his/her own project on their google sites later this week, but definitely before winter break.
Congratulations 4th graders! You did an excellent job!

Gr 4 A Week in the Life Projects
November 20th, 2011 · No Comments · Featured
This is an example of the conversations the students in 4th grade are having online with students from around the world. This post has kids from Florida, Massachusetts, Ohio and 2 students from China talking with one another. Just click the image to enlarge it to make it legible.
We are in the final phases of this adventure with the Flat Classroom Week in a Life project. Most of the students have gathered their media and have posted it to a project site. Since each student is in a different group, it’s been a learning experience for all, as we try to keep up with the various tools used and the different assignments for each student. On Monday, Nov. 21, each 4th grader will try to get all of their requirements done for the project. I have each assignment written out and each student will cross the pieces off as they complete them. If they have any work not completed, the sheet will be coming home with them to be completed, if at all possible.
Some of the groups, such as the food and celebrations group, require pictures of everyday food, special occasion food, etc. Holiday or celebration pictures are also needed for this group. Another group that needs photos that are hard to get at school is the Housing and Transportation group. How do people get around in the Berkshires? Other than personal vehicles, what else is used-public transportation? bikes? canoes? 4-wheelers? tractors? These students need to take pictures of some of the various ways people and goods are transported. They also need photos of various types of houses, made with different materials. Photos, or super short videos (less than a minute- 30 seconds is fine) can all be useful for this project.
Getting images from the internet is not something that the 4th graders should be doing at this point. They do not understand the copyright restrictions, and assume that they can just use whatever they find. As these projects will live online, it is essentially republishing the photos, which is far different than putting it into a paper, giving it to one teacher to read, and having it live on for a while pinned on a refrigerator magnet. We will get to this later. Kids who are really stuck may use http://www.pics4learning.com/, a site specially designed for students to use.
Have your student show you what they have left to do, and check out their various projects, works in progress. We hope to be able to Skype with at least one of the classes the students have worked with before the winter break. Thanks for all of your help!

Homework for computer 4
October 30th, 2011 · No Comments · Featured, Homework
We are really starting to get moving forward with the global project- A Week in the Life. Students have been assigned their small groups and have 6 or 7 students to work with on a project to show their topic. Each teacher participating has several groups that they are in charge of, which means that I am in charge of 3 groups, but not the other 15. Students need to read the posts from the other students and the teacher in charge in their group and respond, remembering to be good representatives of their school. We’ve talked about how to do this in class- no Wassup? posts etc. and especially since we are working with students in various countries, no slang or texting type talk, because it tends to confuse others.
Most of the teachers will be assigning media collection, beginning this week. This means that students are to begin collecting pictures, drawing pictures or making short videos to submit for a final group project. If you do not have a camera that your child can use at home to take pictures, please let me know and I can send a camera home with your child for an overnight photo shoot. Since there are 18 groups, 6 topics, the assignments will vary a bit. Some of the pictures your student will be taking will be done at school, others- for example the environment group, would be enhanced by taking pictures of the local environment. We will also be looking online for pictures to use and using flipcams to make some short videos.
How do you send your collected media to school? You may well not want to send the camera or even an SD card in with your student. Images can be downloaded and attached to emails. I have shown one section of 4th grade how to do this, but they will probably need your help. You can also send larger files via http://wetransfer.info/, a simple free web-based system.
So, what needs to be done at home? Take pictures/short videos- depending on the group and what the teacher in charge has assigned. I can email you a specific parent code for the project or you can ask your child to log in at home to show you what they and the others in their group are doing. All of the media that each group collects will be made into a final group project, like a voicethread or glogster, depending on what the students in that group choose.

This week in Grade 4 computer 10-12-11
October 11th, 2011 · No Comments · Featured
Students have been added to their work groups now and will have a chance to talk with 6-7 other students in their group as they work on their projects. Although some students will be working on the same topics as others in the class, they will actually be collaborating with students in other schools.
Below is a map showing half the schools currently involved in this project. With over 500 students the project has been split into two teams for simple logistical reasons. These are the schools that the 4th graders will be interacting with. If you have Google Earth and want to fly to visit the other schools- click here to download the kml file. ( It will say cannot preview- click the download button on the top right.)

The other project we are beginning to work on is to create a Google site to contain all of the student work from various courses. These are websites, created by the 4th graders, with a page for each subject. They can put their best work, work in progress, projects, etc. on this site and take a bit of time to reflect on their learning. For computer class they will be asked to write about what they learned, what they did well and what they could do better or differently the next time. It gives the students a place to reflect on their work and to self-assess their work.

Several students have asked if they can create their own sites at home. This is perfectly fine with me. We have just begun to learn how to use the sites and have not covered how to add content, but if you poke around, you can probably figure it out. Please take the time to set up any additional sites with your child and pay attention to the sharing settings under more options. This allows you to control who can see any web sites your child creates. The sites we create in school are only shared with other students at BCD and their teachers.

Grade 4 computer joined global project today
October 3rd, 2011 · No Comments · Uncategorized
All of the 4th graders have now signed in to Edmodo.com. They have joined 2 different groups- BCD4, which is just the 4th grade at BCD and the global project group- FCP-AWL-11-2. Several of the students wanted to know how they could tell which students were from China or other countries. This is the list as far as I know at the moment, http://tinyurl.com/fcpcodes.The students in the school in India are on break, and will join in a couple of weeks. We have practiced a bit within our own group, trying to remember to use correct spelling and not to be silly, since when we work with students from other schools we want to show them our best. Students chose avatars to represent themselves online, but are working in voki.com to make talking avatars to put in the global group chat to introduce themselves. Today they designed their vokis, Tuesday and Wednesday classes will do the real voice recording. We just left them with typed in text and a computer voice to save them today. These avatars can also be saved as images and used in place of the default avatars we used to begin with.
Students are excited about being able to talk with children in other places. They are more than welcome to do this at home. They are logging in, not signing up now and they use their firstnamelastinitialbcd and color number passwords. A few students had to make a slight change, but they will remember what to do. To send a message to all the BCD 4th graders, they should be in the BCD4 group, and to send a message to all the kids in the global project, they should click on the FCP group under their avatars. Students cannot privately message one another, all messages go either to the entire group or to a teacher. Fourth graders should respond when others talk with them, and look around for students who have not gotten any replies to their posts yet. Talking “live” with the students on the other side of the world is a little difficult as they are 11-12 hours ahead of our time. If it is 9 pm here, it is around 9 am -tomorrow- there. But you can still respond to their posts.
We will probably begin to break up into the topic groups next week. There are 6 topics and students will be working in a group with 6-7 students from other schools to research and make a presentation. It will be a challenge.
If you have questions, just let me know.
