Grade 9 Algebra

Grade 9 Algebra: February 13-17, 2012

This past week a few extra days were devoted to practicing addition and subtrattion of Rational Expressions with Unlike Denominators.  This week we move into working with mixed expressions, complex fractions and solving rational expressions.  Our goal is to complete this unit of study prior to trips week.  This, by far, has some of the most demanding work to date and I appreciate the hard work that each student has put into their work.  The assignments for the week are posted below:

Monday:  page 693: 13-18 all and 19-27  odd

Tuesday:  finish work not completed in class (handout: Study Guide 12-7)

Wednesday: Quiz  no homework assigned

Thursday:  page 700:  17-33 odd

Friday:  no homework assigned

Have a great week!

Grade 9: Algebra February 6 – 10, 2012

I have been impressed with how well the class has done working with rational expressions.  They have learned to reduce, multiply, divide, add and subtract with like and unlike deniminators using these abstract and complex forms of fractions.  We continue our work over the next few weeks introducing mixed expressions and complex fractions as well as working with rational expressions in equations.  We will wrap up this unit before the March trips week.  Below are the assignments for the week:

Monday:  page 688: 24 – 34 even

Tuesday:  Handout (review for quiz)

Wednesday:  Quiz (adding and Subtracting with and without like denominators)

Thursday: page 693: 13-18 all; 19-27 odd  Mixed and Complex fractions

Friday: No homework

Grade 9: Algebra January 23-27, 2012

Over the past several weeks the class has completed the unit on factoring polynomials and the study of quadratic equations including use the the quadratic formula.  We now take our knowledge of factoring and begin to apply these skills to working with polynomial rational expressions.  This week we begin our work learning how to simplify, multiply and divide polynomial rational expressions.  Our mantra for the next month will be “factor first”!  The assignments for the week are posted below:

Monday:  page 669: 25 – 31 all

Tuesday: page 673: 17-26 all plus 33-36 all

Wednesday: page 679: 13-29 odd

Thursday: Quiz    No Homework

Friday:  Game day   No Homework

Have a great week!

Grade 9 Algebra: January 3-13, 2012

Happy New Year!

As we return, we will be reviewing our rules for factoring polynomials as we prepare for a chapter test and before moving on to new material.  We will talk about quadratic equations and begin to explore a number of methods we can use to solve these equations from factoring, to graphing and ending with the quadratic formula.    We will also take two days for a mid-year review.  This is a helpful exercise to keep our skills fresh and prepare for the end of the year exam.  Below are the assignments for the next two weeks:

Tues.  1/3   Solving Quadratic equations using factoring worksheet:  Study Guide 10-6

Wed.  1/4   pages 602-603: 25-63 odd

Thu.  1/5   review for test in class.  Look at graphing quadratic equations

Fri.  1/6   Chapter 10 Test

Mon.  1/9  In class assignment:  Mid-year review  (No homework)

Tue.  1/10  In class assignment:  Mid-year review (No homework)

Wed.  1/11  Graphing Quadratics: page 625: 21-23 odd

Thu.  1/12  Introducing the Quadratic Formula: Study Guide 11-3 Handout

Fri. 1/13  No homework

Grade 9 Algebra: December 12-16, 2011

The class continues to work hard as we move through factoring polynomials.  As we look at the ways to factor different types of polynomials, we have begun to develop a factoring checklist that will help guide us through more complex polynomials.  We will finish our work with factoring this week.  This important work lays the groundwork that will allow us to tackle more complex problems that require factoring to solve.  This work will begin in January.  Below are the assignments for the week.

Monday: page 591: 21-28 all

Tuesday: page 592: 35-51 odd

Wednesday:  Quiz – No Homework Assigned

Thursday: page 598: 13-29 odd

Friday: No Homework Assigned

Have a great week!

Grade 9 Algebra: December 5-9, 2011

We continue our work with factoring polynomials from using the distributive property to applying F.O.I.L  to factoring certain trinomials.  By the end of the week we will begin looking at special factoring patterns.  Below are the assignments for the week.

Monday:  page 579: 29-45 odd

Tuesday: page 579: 28-44 even

Wednesday: Ouiz (No homework)

Thursday: page 584: 23-45

Friday: no homework given

Have a great week!

Grade 9 Algebra: November 28-December 2, 2011

Welcome Back!  I hope everyone enjoyed the Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends.  This week in math we will continue our work with polynomials as we begin working with factoring.  This important work over the next few weeks will set us up for more complex work in the new year.  Below are the assignments for the week:

Monday:  page 562: 36-51 all

Tuesday: page 570: 33-49 odd

Wednesday: page 570: 32-48 even

Thursday: Quiz (no homework)

Friday: Math Jeopardy (no homework)

Have a great week!

Grade 9 Algebra: November 14-18, 2011

The class is currently studying polynomials.  Last week we reviewed the operations involving positive and negative exponents.  This week we will review and practice applying the rules for adding subtracting and multiplying monomials and polynomials.  We will also explore applying these skills to solving a variety of problems.  The assignments for the week as posted below:

Monday:  page 252: 21-38 All

Tuesday:  page 532: 15-39 Odd

Wednesday:  review worksheet for quiz (handout)

Thursday:  Quiz

Friday:  Game Day!

Have a Great Week!

Grade 9 Algebra: November 7-10, 2011

Last week we wrapped up our study of systems of linear equations and inequalities with a unit test.  This week we begin our study of polynomials which will take us into the new year.  The first trimester comes to a close this week.  There may be a few students who have the option to retake quizzes before the end of the week.  They should see me soon to arrange time.  I will remind students Monday.  Below is a list of assignments this week:

Monday: page 499: 17-35 odd and page 504: 15-27 odd

Tuesday:  page 504: 29-34 even

Wednesday:  Handout review for quiz

Thursday:  Quiz  No homework assigned

Have a great week!

Grade 9 Algebra: October 24-28, 2011

This week we will begin our study of systems of linear equations and inequalities and their possible applications.  We will look at solving more complex and layered problems by both graphing and working algorithms.  A reminder that Tuesday lunch/recess is math help.  Students can come for help and use that time for taking re-quizzes.  The assignments for the week are posted below:

Monday:  Practice Worksheet 8-1 (handout)

Tuesday:  page 476: 17-31 odd

Wednesday: page 473: 15-31 odd
